Discovering the Music of Ancestors, Mothers, Muses
Discovering the Music of Ancestors, Mothers, Muses
Conductor Oliver Prezant and the Opus OP Trio interpret your impressions of the artwork of Piper Leigh
SANTA FE, NM: Piper Leigh’s imaginative, original dresses, pictured above, are life-sized, three-dimensional standing figures that speak to aspects of womens’ lives. On Saturday evening, April 18, we’re going to set up Piper’s art installation, Ancestors, Mothers, Muses, in the lower gallery at CCA, and with your help, Oliver and the Opus OP Trio will create music based on your impressions of Piper’s artwork and her poetry.
ABOUT THE ARTWORK: Each dress is a standing figure that speaks through color, texture, and design, as well as through elements that are added: a poem sewn into the fabric, a painting or a book hanging inside a sheer skirt, a bird’s nest or a spool of thread in a see-through pocket.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM: During the program we’ll have a chance to explore the installation, looking closely at the dresses and share impressions with one another and the musicians. Oliver will guide this exploration, and along the way, he and The Opus OP Trio will be turning thoughts and feelings about the artwork into musical gestures. By the end of the program, the dresses, and the installation as a whole, will become the “musical score” that Oliver and the trio will use to create a musical interpretation of the artwork and the related poetry.
ABOUT THE OPUS OP TRIO: “Carla, Jerry, and Katie are experienced musicians who play all kinds of music, but when we work together, it’s not about classical, jazz, pop, or any other genre,” said conductor and arts educator Oliver Prezant. “They’ve had a special resonance with one another from the very first program we did together more than three years ago. It’s amazing to hear them leaving it all behind and playing what the audience says about a color in a painting, or the feeling of a line of poetry.”
General admission is $25; Students with ID: $10. Prices include ticket fees.

Featuring Cármelo de los Santos, violin, and Natasha Stojanovska, piano, with Oliver Prezant
PLACITAS: Listen here…and here…and here! It’s fascinating to listen closely and to watch the way musicians work together when they play chamber music. The intimate dialog between instruments, the shifting roles of leading and following, the whispers of tenderness, the thunderings of passion, the contrasts of character, and the boldness of individual expression are on full display in this marvelous genre where musicians meet, person to person, in the music that they share with you.
Your host for this exploration is Oliver Prezant, whose engaging talks for the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival and the Santa Fe Opera have introduced thousands of people to the richly rewarding experience of listening deeply to classical music. The musicians you’ll hear are two of New Mexico’s finest, both internationally known: Cármelo de los Santos, violin, and Natasha Stojanovska, piano. The music we’ll hear is César Franck’s Violin Sonata, a Romantic-era favorite that is sure to delight.

Say What?
Oliver Reads Original Poetry at Chatter
SANTA FE, NM: Chatter North, the wonderful Saturday morning chamber music series at CCA, includes a spoken word segment in the middle of the program. This time around, Oliver will be reading original poetry.
We’re not sure yet whether it will be “Something Furry This Way Comes,” “Rabbit of My Dreams,” or some other cheerful canine classics inspired by Alex, a very talented Border-Aussie mix. Whatever the selection, we hope you’ll like them. You might even hear one of Oliver’s poems that strays from the theme of dogs…
Along with the price of admission, you’ll also hear a great piano recital by Christopher O’Riley, former host of the NPR radio show From the Top. Music in various genres by Bach, Sondheim, Strayhorn, Scott, Yorke, and Arlen.
