Opera Basics: Der Rosenkavalier, by Richard Strauss, libretto by Hugo von Hoffmannsthal

The triumph of young love … He’s the young lover of an elegant noblewoman, and she’s to be married to a boorish old Baron. When they fall in love at first sight, they have to extract themselves from their circumstances – no small feat – so they can be together. In this achingly beautiful, hauntingly rich opera, Richard Strauss’ music has as much to say as Hugo von Hoffmansthal’s brilliant libretto. We’ll explore the extraordinarily tight relationship between the text and the music, as well as the themes, plot and characters, and we’ll take a peek at Bruno Ravella’s new production of this timeless classic. Along the way, you’ll learn about the building blocks of opera.

For Listeners: THE OPERATIC TRUMPET - SANTA FE

SANTA FE, NM – It is the sound of kings and heroes, of triumph and dire warnings. It’s the call to arms and to eternal rest. The noble procession, the sound of climactic moments of joy, passion, and despair… From Jericho to judgement day, from animal horn and the hollow thighbone of an enemy to hammered brass, valves, and pistons, the iconic sound of the trumpet echoes through our common human experience.

Join conductor and educator Oliver Prezant and master trumpeter Peter Bond for an interactive exploration of the evolving role of the trumpet in opera. During the presentation, Peter will play excerpts from Baroque, Classical and Romantic operas, and Oliver will share insights on the music, the composers, and the librettists. In addition, we’ll hear Peter play a famous aria for us as we look at the extraordinary influence of 19th century Romantic “bel canto” singing on the art and craft of trumpet playing.

Discovering the Music of Mozart - Santa Fe

Santa Fe, NM: Join conductor and educator Oliver Prezant, soprano Amy Owens, and pianist Nathan Salazar for an up close and personal experience of two celebrated Mozart arias.

During the program, Oliver will lead the audience in an interactive exploration of the music: the exquisite contours of the melodies, the beauty of the language, the meaning of the text, and the relationships between the vocal line and the accompaniment. Amy and Nathan will provide musical illustrations that will help you understand the artistic choices that make for expressive singing and artistic interpretation.

Along the way, you’ll have a chance to share your impressions and feelings with the performers before and after we hear the arias in their entirety.

“ … an almost magical exposition of what is happening in a musical performance piece and why. It showed me, and taught me in tangible ways, how to not take music performances at face value and rather than just ‘enjoy’ it, to instead experience and participate in it more completely.” - Stewart O., audience member

For Listeners: The ABCs of Conducting - TAOS

TAOS, NM: The Taos Opera Guild presents conductor Oliver Prezant, a popular lecturer for the Santa Fe Opera, in an interactive talk entitled The ABCs of Conducting on Saturday, February 10, at New Beginnings Church, 551 Cruz Alta Road, in Taos. Coffee and pastries at 9:30, talk from 10:00 - 11:30.

From the most basic gestures to the most challenging questions of style and interpretation, we’ll look at the many ways that one person with a little wooden stick can inspire a hundred people to make music together with precision, expression, and intensity. What does it feel like to conduct, and to follow a conductor? How do conductors learn their craft and prepare performances when they don’t have an orchestra to practice with? What are the pleasures and the pitfalls of conducting, and what’s it like to approach a work of genius as a young conductor? How has the role of the conductor changed over the years, and how did some of the great conductors of the past approach, and define, the art of conducting?

Oliver Prezant studied conducting at the Pierre Monteux School with maestro Charles Bruck, an associate of Pierre Monteux. As the music director and conductor of the Santa Fe Community Orchestra for twenty years he conducted many of the familiar classics, as well as rarely performed and contemporary works, including new works by New Mexico composers. He taught conducting at the College of Sana Fe, and currently gives workshops in conducting in Santa Fe for working conductors and public and private school ensemble directors.

FREE for Taos Opera Guild members and students. $10 FOR NON-MEMBERS

Practicing Performing

Singers, Instrumentalists, Teachers:

How much time have you spent practicing performing? If the answer is “almost none,” now’s the time to start! During the workshop we’ll use simple musical materials to explore what it means to give and receive attention, how to identify musical ideas and opportunities for expression, and how to share those ideas and feelings with others. If you’re a teacher, you’ll gain insight into how to help your students learn to perform meaningfully and with expression.

PLEASE NOTE: acoustic strings, woodwinds, brass, and voice only for this workshop.

COST: $45 plus ticket fee.

SFPS TEACHERS: Free, if you’re listed on your school’s website.

PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Participants only, no auditors.

Oliver Prezant is a lecturer and educator for the Santa Fe Opera, and was the conductor of the Santa Fe Community Orchestra for many years. As a violist, he performed with the New Mexico Symphony, the Santa Fe Opera, and the California Chamber Virtuosi.

Monteverdi’s Orfeo: Opera’s Mythological Beginnings

Monteverdi’s Orfeo is the story of the great, mortal musician of the ancient world: Orpheus, whose music could charm both animals and the deathly spirits of the underworld. What better topic for an opera? Monteverdi’s astonishing career as a composer spans the height of high-Renaissance music and the birth and establishment of opera as the next great art form. Who gets to sing? And how many at a time? In this presentation we’ll explore the transition from the intricate multi-part writing of the Renaissance to the expressive potential of the individual operatic voice at the beginning of the Baroque. We’ll look at the elements of the music and the plot as well as music on both sides of the transition, as we wonder at where opera began, and what it has become.

Admission is FREE.

Operalive! is a presentation of the Santa Fe Opera.
