SANTA FE - The Spanish Guitar: Tárrega

  • First Presbyterian Church 208 Grant Avenue Santa Fe, New Mexico, 87501 United States (map)

SANTA FE, NM: Join conductor and educator Oliver Prezant and guitarist Roberto Capocchi for an in-depth exploration of the music of Francisco Tárrega, one of the greatest composers of music for the guitar in the Spanish tradition. From the trembling phrases of Recuerdos de la Alhambra (Memories of the Alhambra) to the tender melodies of Lagrima (Teardrop), Tárrega’s music paints an intimate portrait of late-ninteenth century musical life in Spain. During the program, we’ll take time to explore the inner workings of the music and Roberto will demonstrate a variety of approaches to playing this colorful, expressive music on the guitar. In addition, the audience will have the opportunity to share feelings and impressions of the music with one another and the musicians, as we work towards a full performance of the music at the end of the program.

“Roberto is such a a great guitarist and musician—it’s always a treat to hear him play,” said conductor and arts educator Oliver Prezant. “This program is a rare opportunity for audience members to get inside the music and to share their feelings and impressions with the musicians. When you start to hear what’s happening in a piece and to see some of the different ways that it can be imaginatively and expressively interpreted, the whole thing takes on new meaning.”
